7.19 叶公问孔子于子路1，子路不对。子曰：“女奚不曰：‘其为人也，发愤忘食，乐以忘忧，不知老之将至云尔。’”

叶公向子路问孔子的为人，子路不知如何对答。 孔子说：“你为什么不这样说：‘他的为人啊，发愤而忘了吃饭，快乐而忘记忧愁，不知道衰老将要到来，如此而已。’”

【English Translation】
Duke Ye1 asked Zi Lu about Confucius’s character, but Zi Lu didn’t know how to respond. Confucius said: “Why don’t you say: ‘As for his character, he studies diligently and forgets to eat, and he is so joyful that he forgets the worries of life and doesn’t know old age is approaching. That’s all.‘”
