11.25 子路使子羔为费宰。子曰：“贼夫人之子1。”子路曰：“有民人焉，有社稷焉2，何必读书，然后为学？”子曰：“是故恶夫佞者。”
【译文】
子路让子羔去当费邑邑宰。孔子说：“这是害了人家的儿子。” 子路说：“那里有百姓，有土神谷神，为什么一定要读书才算是学习呢？” 孔子说：“所以我讨厌那种强词夺理的人。”

【English Translation】
Zi Lu asked Zi Gao to be the county magistrate of Bi county. Confucius said: “This is harming the children of the civilians there.”
Zi Lu said: “There are the civilians, earth god and grain god in that county. Why must reading books be regarded as learning?”
Confucius said: “That’s why I hate those who argue stubbornly.”
