17.1 阳货欲见孔子1，孔子不见，归孔子豚2。 孔子时其亡也3，而往拜之。 遇诸涂4。 谓孔子曰：“来！予与尔言。”曰：“怀其宝而迷其邦，可谓仁乎？”曰：“不可。好从事而亟失时5，可谓知乎？”曰：“不可。日月逝矣，岁不我与。” 孔子曰：“诺，吾将仕矣。”
【译文】
阳货想让孔子来拜见他，孔子不去，于是他送给孔子一头小猪。 孔子候他不在家时前往拜谢。 两人在途中相遇了。 阳货对孔子说：“来！我要与你谈谈。” 他说道：“身怀才干而听任国家迷乱，这可算是仁吗？” 他自己接着回答：“不可。喜欢参与政事而又屡屡失去机会，这可算是聪明吗？” 他又自己回答：“不可。时光流逝，岁月不等人啊。” 孔子说：“好啊，我打算出来做官了。”

【English Translation】
Yang Huo1 wanted Confucius to visit him and intended to recruit Confucius to work for him. Confucius did not go, so Yang Huo gave Confucius a piglet as a gift.
Confucius did not agree with Yang Huo’s acts of usurpation and so did not want to see him. Therefore, he went to give a gift in return when Yang Huo was not at home.
Unfortunately, they encountered each other on the way.
Yang Huo said to Confucius: “Come here! I want to talk to you.”
He said: “Is it benevolent to have talent but let the State be in chaos without coming out to participate in politics?”
He then answered himself: “No. Is it wise to expect to participate in politics but repeatedly miss opportunities?”
He answered himself again: “No. Time elapses, and time does not wait anyone.”
Confucius said: “Okay, I will come out to take an official position at the right time.”
